Where Petals Fall by Melissa Foster

Available on Amazon $2.99 Kindle edition or $15.99 print edition  ASIN: B00GPVZT0O

From the outside Junie’s life looks almost perfect. She has a wonderful husband, a beautiful daughter and is the proud owner of her own bakery. The reality though is rough. Her once perky and full of life daughter has become withdrawn and seems to be reacting to some sort of invisible emotional trauma. Her husband is in denial and their marriage starts to crack. Junie is suddenly faced with the loss of her father and she heads home to support her mother with her loss. Home for Junie, however, means facing some ghosts from her past- ones that could bring ruin to her marriage or possibly understanding to what is going on with her daughter. Where Petals Fall is a journey of discovery, growth, and finally (well, mostly), closure.

Overall I was thrilled with Melissa Foster’s writing- I always am. She has a way of writing characters that literally do come to life. Fortunately for Junie and her husband though, they aren’t real;  for most of the book I wanted to smack her upside the head and give him a good shake. While they were very true to life, they were both acting like idiots. I really can honestly say, I’m not a fan of either of them and thought they were both selfish and totally focused on what was best for themselves- not unlike many people out there in society. I’m happy with the way the book ended and I love that Melissa  left their story partially unresolved because I think they both still have a lot of work to do on both their marriage and their family relationships. I LOVE Junie’s mom. She doesn’t make excuses- and she lays it all out there just as it is. I actually cheered when she kicked Junie out and forced her to fix her own problems.

I’m a big fan of symbolism and this book had plenty of it along with a great twist on how past sins can come back at any time to mess up our lives. I’m fairly certain we all work hard to present a good appearance – some harder than others. One of my favorite pieces of this book was how Junie came to grip with how problems are normal and that it is okay to have problems. The plot was familiar, but with a good twist (I won’t give it away). While the pace was a bit slow in the beginning it picked up and carried us right to the end. I had to actually slow down so I could savor the tasty bits at the end which was difficult since I’d felt I was twiddling my thumbs a bit during the first third of the book. I would definitely recommend this book as a read for a cold wintry day and a warm fire!
